Hit the Ground Running

Today was the midterm election and I have to say I am relieved it is over, regardless of the results. As I, and just about every progressive predicted, there was an avalanche of money and an overwhelming number of television and radio ads. The money on the Republican side came from corporations, both American and foreign owned, as well as a huge chunk of anonymous money whose names people like the United States Chamber of Commerce refused to divulge. It is known that at least part of the Chamber of Commerce money came from foreign countries and businesses that advertise that they specialize in taking American jobs. Fox news gave over two million in donations, where the second biggest share holder in that company is Prince Alwaleed bin Talal al-Saud of Saudi Arabia.

We have seen the rise of the Tea Party, an alleged grass roots movement who's members shout that they want their country back. However, taking their country back consists of tax cuts for the richest citizens and deregulation of business, where we are living through a Great Recession caused by deregulation. You never hear Tea Party people demanding fair trade with China and repeal of NAFTA or the World Trade Organization, things that would actually bring back jobs to the United States. Why is that? Because the Tea Party was started and financed by the oil billionaire Koch brothers, capitalizing on the anger of people who are mad about the mess created by Bush, but who have no one else to yell at but Obama. Not that there are not valid reasons to be angry. But they are being steered in the wrong direction by the money paying for their rallies, buses and conventions.

Now that we have seen the effects of corporate person-hood and unlimited money in the election system it is time we work towards reversing this selling out of our county to multinational corporations. We need to cut off foreign investment in our elections so that our representatives are doing what is best for the people, not what is best for Saudi Arabia or India or China. We need a Constitutional Amendment that states that corporations and other non-natural entities, such as unions, are not persons and shall not enjoy Constitution protections.

Why We Need a Constitutional Amendment

On Thursday, January 22, 2010, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled that corporations had the right to spend as much money as they want on elections in the United States. The opinion in Citizens United v Federal Elections Commission is based on the free speech rights of the person - corporation. This overturned over 100 years of the SCOTUS rulings which limited commercial speech in regards to elections. Prior to this decision corporations had a limit on what they could directly spend or donate to any election, or they could use lobbyists to influence laws and lawmakers.

For much of 2009, the health care industry spent $1.4 million a day on lobbying to defeat health care reform. We have seen the result of that in the defeat of a public option, which 77% of the American people want. What if the oil industry wanted to pass a law exempting them from paying any profit or royalties for oil pumped from public land? Exon alone has made $11.68 Billion in three months. Imagine how much the entire industry could spend to get candidates elected and laws passed.

And anyone can own stock in a corporation. American laws and policy can now be controlled by foreign interests. Our energy policy can be dictated by companies own by Saudi Arabia. Our trade policy can be determined by Chinese corporations. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito can mouth "not true" all he wants. It is true. Unless we stop this and do it now, it may just be the end of democracy. And since this was a Supreme Court ruling the only way to truly stop this is through a Constitution Amendment.

The first thing we have to do is make people aware of this Supreme Court decision and what it means to our country. Please, cut and past this message, and send it to at least 5 people, and encourage them to send it to five more people. With the mainstream media owned by the corporations we have to become our own media on this. By passing this message on you won't win a thousand dollars in 48 hours. But you may just help to save democracy in the United States.

Constitution for the People

I am starting this blog so that I can place factual information, as well as my personal thoughts and opinions before the people who believe that our country, the United States of America, is the greatest country on earth, who's founding fathers have left in place the tools we need to govern ourselves.

At this point in time it is my belief that the most serious threat to the government for and by the people is that of corporate personhood. We must pass a Constitutional Amendment that only gives Constitution rights and protection to "natural" human beings, not corporations, banks, or unions. This is the only way to insure "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Please feel free to send me your contributions and opinions.

What Would Jesus Do?

As my primary education consisted of 12 years of Catholic school I believe that I can speak with a small bit of authority on this subject. Of course, it appears my opinion is in direct contradiction to many of those far right wing persons who identify themselves as Christians, but seem not to follow Christ's teachings. They appear to be Christian in name only.

First off, I do not understand why "Christian in name only" people consistently want to tell me what Christ "really meant." I did not know that God had difficulty communicating. When Christ says "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of my father" I believe him. Do not try to justify certain behavior by saying "well, there was this rock formation which they called the eye of the needle...." The quotes are simple. The meaning is simple. The truth is easy. Lies are hard.

Second, I do not know why the "Christian in name only" people want to cite the old testament as authority for their opinions. Christ stated "I am the new covenant, everything before me is past." Simple. Here are the new rules. Ignore the old rules. If you want to follow the rules set forth in the old testament then call it the Torah and become Jewish. Nothing wrong with that. Well, except that Judaism is not a proselytizing religion and they may not want you.

Third, understand that it may be more important that Christ was a human being than that he was divine. Why? Because he lived his life as an example as to how we are supposed to live our own lives! If Christ were only a divine spirit then we could not be expected to live our lives the way that he did. Who could live up to the example set by a divine spiritual being that did not have the desires of the flesh? The answer is nobody. Even if you do not believe that Christ was God, you can believe that here was a man that was able to live his life in a certain way, and even sinned, but could ask for, and receive, forgiveness.

Fourth, we come to the question: what would Jesus do and why? As is most common regarding the truth, the answer is simple. When asked a straight up question He gave a straight up answer: Question: Lord, how do I enter the kingdom of our Father? - Answer: You must love yourself, as you love God, and your neighbor.

Let's break this down a little. In order to love God you have to love yourself first. Once you learn to love yourself, then you can learn to love God, then you can learn to treat all others in the same manner that you would want to be treated, because you love yourself in the same way that you love God. Okay, a little complicated but the bottom line is simple: Treat everyone the way you would want them to treat you, and treat yourself with the same love as if you were God.

If you are not sure what this entails let's look to the examples left to us by Jesus, the person for whom we are asking what would he do:

He would/we should heal the sick.
He would/we should feed the hungry.
He would/we should clothe the naked.
He would/we should forgive those that sin against us.

"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, so you do unto me."

So, what should we do? We do what Jesus would do. Or at least as close as us mere mortals can come. We need to change the Constitution so that the government is returned to the people, not the corporations,so that we can pass laws and administer programs that benefit everyone, not just benefit corporations and their billionaire CEOs.

We have to remind those of us who call themselves Christians that we need to start acting like it, not just in church, but in life. And we have to realize that all major religions have at their core a mandate to treat everyone the way they way they would like to be treated.

But most important, we have to get moving and do what needs to be done to help ourselves and our fellow man.

Move Your Money

The story below is not from a left wing liberal website. It is from the BusinessMirror, a business website. The article basically states that the "too big to fail" banks have used your money to reap huge profits and hand out obscene end of the year bonuses equaling at least $30 Billion. This is being done while your homes are being foreclosed upon, you are losing your jobs, and losing your health care. Not only that, they are using your money to lobby politicians not to impose regulations that might reign them in.

The problem is that corporations and these big banks are allowed to corrupt our political system because they receive Constitutional protections, the same as human beings. Of course, they do not have the same burdens as us mere humans, like going to prison when we break the law. And so they are able to contribute to election funds and buy trips and gifts for politicians, who then do their bidding. You can see what they have done to the health care reform that 67% of the people wanted. And there have yet to be any meaningful bank reforms.

There is a case before the Supreme Court right now which will determine who will be in charge of this country: Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. If the Supreme Court gives full "person-hood" to corporations the only thing that will save this country is a Constitutional Amendment which states that only "natural" people get the rights and protection of the Constitution.

But there is something we can do right now to show the corporations we are ready for the fight: Move your money from the "too big to fail" banks to local banks and credit unions. Get a local bank or credit union credit card. View the MoveYourMoney video HERE, and find a solvent institution near you.

Let's do this thing now, moving our money, and get ready for the fight for a Constitutional Amendment which may be the only way to insure "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
